Sun Releases X-class Blast

NASA reports that a sizable solar flare has erupted from the center of the sun, with limited effects on Earth expected.

An outburst of energy and X-rays from the sun, the eruption is rated as an X1.4 class solar flare, in the most powerful class of such blasts.

The space agency plans to update the first report, if needed, as the flare's trajectory become more clear. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory website reports that an outburst of charged particles, a coronal mass ejection, appears "Earth-directed" from the outburst, traveling at 850 feet per second. However early indications are that the CME will only graze Earth's magnetic field, with limited effects.

The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather center warns of the flare:

"Area of impact consists of large portions of the sunlit side of Earth, strongest at the sub-solar point.

Radio - Wide area blackout of HF (high frequency) radio communication for about an hour."
